I recently acquired a classic car from the 60’s. I was looking for a Sunday driver. Something to cruise around town on the weekends when I want to slow things down from the fast-paced nature of everyday business here at X2nSat. The car is a 1964 Polara convertible. It did not have any special historical significance to me other than I was drawn to it because I liked the way that it looked.
It was not until after I purchased the car that I did some deeper research and realized that it’s name was a reference to the Polaris star and was chosen to capitalize on a nation that was captivated by anything having to do with space. Ford made a comparable, competing vehicle that many of you are probably familiar with, the Galaxie.
It got me thinking about how for as long as I can remember, I have been drawn too and had an affinity for anything space-related. I guess it should be no surprise to me that I have spent my entire working career in the communications and satellite industry.
In the 1960’s the Space Race was in full swing and the Russians had a head start prompting President Kennedy to boldly proclaim the intention of putting a man on the moon.
In the summer of ‘69, Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon made that vision a reality. It was an exciting time in what was the beginning of the modern space era. Things advanced relatively quickly such that by the 80’s and 90’s, Shuttle missions became a regular occurrence. It is not that going to space became any easier. Our space program has had its share of accidents and tragedies. Many brave men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country and in the name of science and exploration.
We all stand on the shoulders of these pioneers of the last frontier. Today we continue to make advances at a dizzying pace and see new innovation in the SatCom industry everyday. X2nSat is currently knee deep in the construction of our latest teleport in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Starting with a clean foundation, we have an opportunity to build a state-of-the-art gateway that can accommodate the latest technological breakthroughs in next-gen spacecraft and networks.
Our new facility will be our first *4G Teleport and the first in the industry to accommodate these rapid advances the industry is experiencing. High-throughput Satellites are greatly reducing cost-per-bit and can easily provide 20 times the throughput of fixed satellite services. Satellite constellations such as OneWeb and others are rapidly changing the game and enabling providers to bring high-speed connectivity to the entire planet in a cost-effective manner.
Last year we proudly celebrated our 20th year here at X2nSat and we are proud of all we have accomplished and even more excited about blazing new trails in the SatCom industry. Now when I am cruising in the Polara with the top down on a clear starry night, I can take a minute and think about how we have come so far and imagine what is yet to come as we continue to push the boundaries and limits of the last frontier, space.
